Honestly my first impression of this bar was not really favorable. I was put off by the strength of this bar. By strength I mean it’s tobacco smell, and it’s rich taste. This bar comes from the Republica Del Cacao from Ecuador.
I’m glad I took my time with this one though. Yes, there’s a tobacco scent, but there’s also a mild nutty scent which sets the tone for this smooth bar.
On taste it’s earthy, licorice-like, and woody with a hint of a fruity component. It’s very sweet and and creamy and you really get that sense when you melt a bite in your mouth. I really do advise you to melt this one in your mouth. that’s where it truly shines.
This is a solid and quality bar, that (if you’re like me) might take you a while to appreciate. I think it took me about two weeks to finally “get it”.
The packaging even comes with a tasting guide which is great for a chocolate n00b like me! You get tips on “Appearance”, “Aroma”, “Taste”, “Touch”, and even “Listen”. While I’ve been to many chocolate tastings, it’s good to note the differences each chocolate producer or critic offers to help you get the best bite out of your chocolate bar.
Another plus: I found a video (or rather a sideshow) of Republica Del Cacao. There’s no VO, just pictures and some video of the plantation and production.
To sum it up, get this bar! If you don’t instantly like it, give it some time because it’s worth the wait!
